Personal Academic Consultations

What they are. ACE offers undergraduate students an opportunity to meet one-on-one with an ACE instructor to review and make improvements to their study and personal success habits.  These consultations, which are free and available only to current FSU students, involve assessing a student’s need and developing a plan of action for reaching the student’s academic goals.  Consultations are not intended as long-term coaching situations. Therefore, a student may schedule no more than one consultation (which includes a follow-up visit) per semester.

The topics.  Topics covered include the following:

  • Time management:  assess your current use of time, learn to set priorities and create a more balanced schedule, and formulate an action plan.
  • Learning styles and memory: learn about how your memory works best and how knowing your preferred learning styles can help you study.
  • Reading strategies: learn to zero in on important information in your course readings and to think critically about what you read.  (NOTE:  This is NOT a remedial reading tutorial.)
  • General study skills: assess your current study skills and habits, select specific skills to work on, and create an action plan for improvement.

The process.  Students should contact ACE at ACE@admin.fsu.edu to request an appointment.  Please include your full name, FSU email address, and phone number.  An ACE instructor will contact you to set up an appointment time. Before the appointment, students should complete the ACE Survey.  Depending on your topic of interest, you may be given a “homework” assignment to be completed before the first appointment.  At the first appointment, instructor and student will work together to create an action plan based on the student’s particular needs and interests.  At a follow-up appointment, instructor and student will review progress and create another action plan as needed.

Additional academic support.  Students who want support beyond what an ACE Personal Academic Consultation can provide should contact FSU’s Adult Learning Evaluation Center (ALEC).  ALEC offers weekly academic coaching sessions and ADHD coaching, for a fee.

ALEC also administers tests for learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders.  Students can access a Performance Screener to determine whether they should be evaluated for a disability.  The screener and an initial evaluation interview at ALEC are free of charge, but there is a fee for testing.  The fee is sometimes covered by health insurance; contact ALEC for details on insurance coverage.
